Overview

The Hortus Malabaricus Botanical Garden is a plant conservation project initiated in 2015 by the SciGenom Research Foundation – a non-profit Trust, founded by Sam Santhosh in 2015.

The Senior Scientist should be able to plan and lead the Research and Academic activities at the Hortus Malabaricus Botanical Garden —a 27-acre living repository that celebrates Kerala’s rich botanical heritage and the legacy of the 17th-century magnum opus ‘Hortus Malabaricus’. This role is critical in developing and executing a grounded approach to establish the garden as a global leader in the plants of the 12 volume Hortus Malabaricus. The ideal candidate will combine a passion for nature and history with science to build a successful research program at the Garden.

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Senior Scientist with a PhD in Botany and at least 15 years of research experience after PhD. This role involves two key responsibilities:

Research & Laboratory Management

Setting up a plant biochemistry lab to perform biochemical assays related to plant health and traits, with emphasis on conservation and adaptation

Manage and expand plant collections in a greenhouse environment

Lead a research team focused on studying plant specimens in Hortus Malabaricus Books

Explore the soil microbiome genomics of medicinal plants

Apply for Research grants

Publish in peer reviewed journals with focus on plants in Hortus Malabaricus

Education & Outreach

Design short-term courses related to Hortus Malabaricus and the medicinal plants of Kerala

Promote public awareness of Kerala’s rich plant diversity through seminars and workshops

Collaborate with academic institutions, botanical gardens, and conservation bodies to enhance outreach initiatives.

Qualifications & Experience

PhD in Botany, Plant Science, or a related discipline.

15+ years of experience after PhD in plant research, biochemistry, or a related field.

Proven expertise in setting up and managing research laboratories.

Experience in greenhouse management and plant cultivation.

Passion for education and public engagement, with experience in designing training programs or courses.

Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Knowledge of Kerala’s plant biodiversity, endemic species, and conservation challenges.

Proven track record in grant writing and securing research funding.
